Today I bring to you the curry leaves hair tonic recipe which can boost hair growth.
Clogged drains courtesy of your mane?
Well you are not alone. Thanks to the lifestyle and water our poor hair has taken a beating!
My mom’s favorite quip whenever I visit her is,”earlier every time you used to take off your scrunchie you hair would tumble to the floor (made me feel like a desi Rapunzel) and now look at it! Now when you do it, everything falls on the ground!”
While I used to crinkle my nose in mock anger at mom, I knew it was true, I was worse than my pet dog in terms of shedding and my hair had in fact seen better days.
Curry leaves – my savior:
Fortunately my mom herself came with a solution.
A hair tonic fortified with a very common ingredient – curry leaves.
Curry leaf, the poor unsung hero that lends flavor to food and yet gets tossed mercilessly out of most plates.
Leave all the other benefits of curry leaves aside, but once you know the wonders it can do to your hair, you would not want to throw another leaf!
Curry leaves contain enough nutrients to strengthen the hair follicles, work on damaged shaft, add life to dull hair and make it bouncy.
The bonus – It helps in resolving premature greys too.
How to prepare curry leaves hair tonic at home?
Take a handful of curry leaves. Wash and dry them in the shade.
Take a small cup of coconut oil. Heat the oil on medium flame.
Once the oil is hot, drop the leaves in. Heat till the leaves turn burn.
Switch of the flame and allow it to cool. Strain and use.
Method of application:
- Take a small cotton ball, dip it in the oil
- Section your hair
- Apply it evenly on the scalp
- Massage thoroughly
- You can do this at night, leave it on wash it off in the morning
- If you, for any reason can’t do that, you can use a hot towel to wrap your hair after applying the tonic. This opens the pores and facilitates easy absorption of the oil by the scalp.
Storage of the curry leaves hair tonic:
This tonic should last you for two applications. So you can store the rest for a week. Can you store it more than that? I’m yet to find out.
While applying it, make sure you take some separately and then dip the cotton ball in it. This ensures that the tonic doesn’t go bad.
You can also try a hair spa at home and DIY neem hair packs.
How long before you see the results?
Depends on the severity of the issue, but you should see results in 3 weeks, if you apply this lotion twice a week. So in other words, 6 applications should give you positive results.
Like they say in shampoo ads, if you increase your curry leaf intake apart from using this tonic, you will get faster results and at a fraction of the cost of all those anti hair fall shampoos, hair colors and dyes.
Now that you know the benefits of curry leaves for hair, do try this curry leaves hair tonic recipe out and let us know how effective it has been for you.

Mommies what do you do to tackle hair fall and premature greying? Let me know in the comments.
Hi Chitra, I’ve been eyeing this hair tonic for quite a while now. Couple of questions-
(1) Drying in the shade is only to dry the water used for washing curry leaves? Or shud the moisture from the curry leaves get dried?
(2) Can we use this oil as a daily oil (without washing the hair)
TIA
Hi Vandana,
1) Drying in the shade is to dry the water after washing the leaves. If you omit the drying, the water will cause the hot oil to splutter a lot.
2)If you are ok with leaving oil then yes you can use it as a daily oil too. In that case, you can use a handful of leaves for 2 cups of oil.
